Is It Really About Us?
There is a certain power in prayer that I want to share with everyone; a certain power that we all have access to, actually; something that we can all do in the comfort of our own time and space.

Prayer, as most people look at it, is usually a way for people to ask God for a lot of things. Things like good grades maybe? Or a raise? Maybe even a toy for some people or a brand new car. Well, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s how most people do it anyway and it still is a form of prayer.
What we usually do, however, when we pray, is we tell God how great our day was, how good the food we ate was, how nice the sunshine was or how cold the rain got when we got home. That’s normal. However, what should we really be talking about when in prayer? Should it be about us? Or about God?
There’s nothing wrong with talking about our day, believe me, I totally understand, but there should also be time for us to listen, don’t you think?
Think of it this way. You could be talking to a friend over the phone. You just keep on talking and talking and talking. Telling him about how good you feel, how great you want to be in the future. Then you tell him about all your hopes and dreams, then after you’ve said your piece, you say “buh bye!”
Wouldn’t that be a bit, just a bit, rude? Of course God is a forgiving and loving God, but does that mean that he doesn’t get hurt as well?
You see, in my three days of silence back at the Arvisu House (the Jesuit pre-novitiate house located in Loyola Heights, Katipunan, Manlia, pretty much like the little Vatican we have here in the Philippines) the main thing that I realized was this. Prayer, is more about God, not me. Not about how I’m doing, but about how God is doing.
How is God doing? Was he able to rest for today? Was he able to sit back for a few minutes to take a breather? How is He?
Now, how do we pray? That’s a big question. Simple, but pretty complex as well.
Well, I think and I learned, actually, that prayer should be more solemn than just a quick jump into the chapel, because praying is conversing, not with someone equal to you, but someone very much higher than you, but chooses to be equal. That is prayer. Prayer is talking to a God, so humble, so kind and gentle that he would do anything to make you feel so secure, so loved and belonged.
First of all, you have to set a time for it. A time to pray that’s detached from all other times. A time where you can confidently let go of everything else and just pray. That is very important, you’ll never know how long a conversation could get, right?
Then stay put. Don’t keep moving around or keep checking the time. You have to just stay put and let God’s clockwork do it’s magic. That way, you are settled and ready. It takes a really beautifully formed structure of prayer for this to work.
Now, this is like pre-production. This is the part where you prepare for the prayer itself.
So, take some time off, maybe just about 20-30 minutes, and then look for a place, preferably somewhere you can be alone in silence. Time and place.
When you start praying, take five deep breaths, close your eyes, maybe, and leave everything behind. This is where it starts. Usually, when you start to notice that you are in silence, distractions suddenly come into your head. Distractions like unsolved problems, or unpaid bills, unseen people and the like. Just try and tell these distractions to go away for a while unless of course if these are serious enough matters to include in your prayer.
Then, start talking to God, stop for a while, listen very, very carefully, and respond. There will be a response, believe me.
“But, isn’t it just my imagination? Isn’t it just me?” you ask? Well, yes, unless of course if you’re insane? Of course it’s your imagination, it’s your mind. But God created us with such imagination and with such a beautiful mind, why won’t he use it, right? God responds to our calls, people, we just have to listen to it. That is how prayer is like, if you kind of dig deep enough that is.
